Fathers Day History, Facts and Origin

Sonora smart Dodd

Many people tried to approve the idea of Father’s day, one of them was Grace Golden Clayton. She lost her father in the coal mine blast in the Monongah, which had killed over 361 men the previous December. This Disaster left more than 1000 children fatherless. She suggested the local pastor arrange a celebration in the memory of those fathers. The pastor accepted her request and the nation’s first celebration of father’s day was sponsored by the West Virginia church. The first commemoration took place on July 5, 1908, in West Virginia, but it was a one-time observance.

In 1909, Washington woman, Sonora Smart Dodd (being one of the six children raised by a single father), wanted to admire his father (Civil war veteran William Smart Jackson) for all the sacrifices. Sonora Smart Dodd was the key person in the establishment of Fathers day, she strived to obtain an official equivalency of father’s day to mother’s day. She talked to the pastors of local churches that June 5 (her father’s death anniversary) should be a day in which parishioners honored fatherhood.

This idea of honoring fatherhood was approved by the pastors of the churches and government officials. But she didn’t allocate more time to the organizer to prepare sermons, therefore the first father’s day state-wide was taken place on the 3rd Sunday of June (June 19, 1910). Every year, father’s day is celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of June in America.

One more claim for the establishment of Fathers day was Mothers Day, which was observed for the 1st time two months before in Grafton. An additional explanation for the foundation of Father’s Day is the minister of the Lions’ Club (Chicago branch), Harry Meek. He celebrated the first Father’s Day with his company in 1915 and that day they decided to observed father’s day on the 3rd Sunday of June since it was the closest Sunday to Harry Meek’s birthday. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge suggested that Father’s day should be regarded as a national holiday. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson recognized Fathers Day as a holiday to be observed on the 3rd Sunday of June every year, however, the day was not legally approved through the presidency of Richard Nixon till 1972.

The idea of a Father’s Day was embraced in 1930 around Scandinavia. Initially, the American date was used to celebrate father’s day, but then the Nordic countries planned to change it to the 2nd Sunday of November in 1994. This date was decided to accelerate the sales in the business period prior to Christmas. Denmark didn’t follow the same date. They didn’t notify the public and media about the new date, therefore, Fathers Day stood on the same date. Fathers Day is held on 8th August in Taiwan since the Chinese word for eight is, while an informal word for father is baba, thus the 8th day of August sounds alike to daddy. Father’s day was celebrated on the same date in China, however then the date was changed to the 3rd Sunday of June.
